How to Avoid Water in Your Home This Spring

Water damage. A very scary issue that most homeowners associate with being very expensive to remedy. However, with these few simple tips, you can minimize costly repairs.

Most water issues are first noticed in the basement - water seeping through the cracked brick in the basement walls. Other areas that you may notice water issues inside your home are drywall cracks, crown molding pulling away from the wall, windows and doorways may stick or sag. Mold/mildew issues are also a result of water issues. This year, heavy snow melting and the potential for spring rain is a concern for homeowners. If you have a soggy basement, you're not alone. According to the American Society of Home Inspectors (based in Des Plaines, IL), they estimate that 60% of U.S. homes have a wet basement, and 38% run the risk of basement mold.

What can you do? Diverting water away from your home is the key! There is three major issue to avoid: condensation, runoff and sub-surface seepage. Here are a few tips you can do now:

  • Ensure the downspouts on your gutters are connected and are pointed away from your home.
  • Clear away any debris from downspouts and if you haven't checked your gutters be sure to ensure they are clear of debris so water can run freely away from your home.
  • Make sure your sump pump is in good working condition
